| Kaempfer, Engelbert | (1651-1713) Dutch physician and explorer; Kaempfer's History of the Empire of Japan was published in English translation in 1726, the same year Swift published his Travels. Kaempfer's book is a likely source for passages regarding Japan in Gulliver's third (but last written) voyage. Some researchers have made a case that other portions of Swift's book may also have borrowed from Kaempfer's work (see Exploration: Kaempfer) |
| Duchess of Kendal | mistress of George I and a principal in the Woods halfpence affair addressed by Swift in his "Drapier's Letters"; she also assisted Robert Walpole (Flimnap) in his return to power after he was forced to resign in 1717. She is satirized as one of the King's Cushions, ie. a mistress, in Lilliput.
