The following pointers may make viewing this site easier.
Homepage and Addresses
Navigation
- every (or almost every) page has at least one link back to the Gulliver homepage, usually as a text link at the bottom of the page.
- in most cases, the East Wind icon is a link back to the homepage.
- when there are logical next or previous pages (e.g. within the text of the story), links are provided.
- where a page is a level or two down in the hierarchy, this is indicated in the heading and links are provide to go up to the higher levels (e.g., as above
About this Project: Hints & Tips)
- I added a search feature (compliments of FreeFind) to the site homepage.
- FreeFind also provides a site index.
Links
- links from within the text of the story open in a new window so you don't lose your place.
- I find relevant links through searches of Web, using search engines such as Raging (http://www.raging.com), but also through other search services, leads from mailing lists, and suggestions sent to me.
- though I don't have an strict policy on what links I include, I tend towards inclusiveness, meaning I take just about anything. I even include junk, if it is related in some way to the Travels, on the assumption it might interest or entertain someone (though not necessarily you).
- if one of the links I provide gets you an error message, please send me a note telling me the URL or title of my page and the name or URL of the bad page.
- if you have a problem with what you find on someone else's page -- many (perhaps most) links within these pages point to sites on other servers -- please feel free to let the owner of that site (not me) know about it..
Text
These pages should be viewable with even the simplest browsers. I've even tested it some with Lynx and it is substantially accessible.
- all the text is formatted in simple HTML (3.0)
- tables are used for the title and logo on most pages: otherwise these are applied only to position graphics or text as needed
- frames - only for the Bibliography
- one form (for comments)
- no Java scripts
- no cookies
I am in the process of removing any text settings (ie. <body text=#xxxxxx links=#dddddd...) reverting to the system defaults. Therefore the reader has the widest control as to how the text appears. However, this is a recent change and it may take some time for it to spread to all my pages.
Graphics
As with the text, I'm in the process of reversing earlier design decisions. I'm removing most of the unnecessary graphics and reduced the size of any remaining ones from most pages. I've decided these add little to the presentation and slow up the works.
Most graphics are links: one concession I've made to style over standards is to add the border=0 argument to most images, therefore hiding the highlighting that appears with links.
Images are scanned from originals; generally, "thumbnail" images are saved as .gif files and act as links which display full-size .jpeg versions.
